Book Review - Essential Sight Words Level 1 - Introductory Readers (set of 8 books)

Essential Sight Words Level 1 - Introductory Readers (set of 8 books)

by Kay de Silva

Rating ** (2 stars)

Sometimes items which can be great are rushed into production. This is one of those items. This is a collection of 8 early readers. Before the readers there is an introduction to the parents which expresses how the stories were created for her two children. The author then makes some decisions for her stories which I do not particularly agree with. Nor, does she provide evidence based on her own observations.

This book has almost no pictures. Before the reader begins there is a picture and word of nouns - that is it. The rest of the pages are just words. This book is boring. It is perfect if you want to drill your children on reading, and take all the enjoyment out of it.

That being said there is some good aspects of this book. The first is that you get eight stories for the price of one. The stories continue in ability, with the first story starting with one word pages and the last story having between seven and eight word sentences. The second aspect that I think I like is that if a word has not yet been introduced it is on the bottom of the page. While I think this is a great idea it is a bit awkward when you have a bold sentence and then also have the same sentence (although this is not always the case) right below it in finer print. If it was less intrusive then I think it would make for a better format.

The actual writing of the stories earns this book the two stars. The fact that the book just looks boring looses it three stars. There is no way this would have held my children's attention when they were learning to read. It will not even hold L's attention now.
